Neutron Inelastic Scattering Processes as Background for Double-Beta Decay Experiments

چکیده

We investigate several Pb(n, nγ) and Ge(n, nγ) reactions. We measure γ-ray production from Pb(n, nγ) reactions that can be a significant background for double-beta decay experiments which use lead as a massive inner shield. Particularly worrisome for Ge-based double-beta decay experiments are the 2041-keV and 3062-keV γ rays produced via Pb(n, nγ). The former is very close to the Ge double-beta decay endpoint energy and the latter has a double escape peak energy near the endpoint. Excitation γ-ray lines from Ge(n, nγ) reactions are also observed. We consider the contribution of such backgrounds and their impact on the sensitivity of next-generation searches for neutrinoless double-beta decay using enriched germanium detectors.

Dynamic neutron scattering from conformational dynamics. I. Theory and Markov models.

The dynamics of complex molecules can be directly probed by inelastic neutron scattering experiments. However, many of the underlying dynamical processes may exist on similar timescales, which makes it difficult to assign processes seen experimentally to specific structural rearrangements. Here, we show how Markov models can be used to connect structural changes observed in molecular dynamics s...

Survey of background scattering from materials found in small-angle neutron scattering

Measurements and calculations of beam attenuation and background scattering for common materials placed in a neutron beam are presented over the temperature range of 300-700 K. Time-of-flight (TOF) measurements have also been made, to determine the fraction of the background that is either inelastic or quasi-elastic scattering as measured with a 3He detector. Other background sources considered...

Simulation of HEAO 3 Background

A Monte Carlo technique for modeling background in space-based gamma-ray telescopes has been developed. The major background components included in this modeling technique are the diffuse cosmic gamma-ray flux, the Earth's atmospheric flux, the decay of nuclei produced by spallation of cosmic rays, trapped protons and their secondaries, the decay of nuclei produced by neutron capture, and the d...

On the determination of double diffraction dissociation cross section at HERA

The excitation of the proton into undetected multiparticle states (double diffraction dissociation) is an important background to single diffractive deep-inelastic processes ep → epρ, epJ/Ψ, epX at HERA. We present estimates of the admixture of the double diffraction dissociation events in all diffractive events. We find that in the J/Ψ photoproduction, electroproduction of the ρ at large Q and...
